I got a call from a woman in the Hollywood by the Sea neighborhood of Oxnard on a weekday evening. She was in a parking structure, infant strapped in the stroller right next to the car, and her fob had gone completely dark. No lock response, no unlock, nothing. The door was shut. The baby was out, thankfully, because she had been gone maybe thirty seconds returning a cart. But the car was locked and she had no way in.

The dealer was closed. A tow was not going to solve anything. She needed the door open and the car running.

I got there and got the door open first. That was the only priority in that moment.

Then I looked at the fob. This was not a dead battery situation. The fob circuit had failed. The emergency blade inside the fob was intact, which was useful for getting in, but the fob itself was not recoverable.

I built a replacement fob on site, cut the emergency blade to her vehicle, and programmed everything through the OBD port. She watched the whole thing from a folding chair she pulled out of her trunk. The baby slept through it.

She drove home that evening. Some calls are just about price. That one was not.
