A web developer in Thousand Oaks, over near Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza, called me about his 2004 Quest stuck on a steep hillside cul-de-sac. One lane, no turnout, barely room for a sedan let alone a flatbed. The dealer told him to figure out how to get the van to them first. He couldn't. No working key.

The original key was physically there but the transponder had gone intermittent. Common failure on these second-gen Quests. The PCF7936 chip gets weak after twenty years of heat cycles in a California pocket. I pulled the transponder data through the OBD port off the BCM, cloned it onto a fresh ID46 chip, and cut the blade to match his door lock.
Then the real test: all four buttons on the remote, lock, unlock, panic, hatch. Cycled the ignition three times. NATS light on the dash stayed off, which is what you want. If that little car-with-a-key icon blinks, you have a problem. His stayed dark.
The van never moved. He stood there watching from his driveway with his laptop still open on a patio table. Whole thing took maybe 25 minutes. A fraction of what the dealer wanted, and that dealer price assumed the car could somehow get there.
