North Ranch sits up in the hills above Thousand Oaks, and the streets up there do what they want. Wide sweeping curves near the main entrance, then suddenly you're on a narrow cul-de-sac that doesn't have room for two cars to pass each other without someone backing up.
That's where the Quest was parked. The owner had one key left, the remote head unit, and the lock and unlock buttons had stopped responding. She could still get in with the blade and start the car, but the remote function was dead. She'd already replaced the CR1616 herself, which was the right call. Battery wasn't the problem.
When I got there I confirmed the blade still turned, the car still ran. The issue was in the programming. Somewhere along the way, the key had dropped out of the registered memory. It happens on this generation. The blade works because the ignition reads the transponder, but the remote side is a separate enrollment and hers had come loose from the system.
I ran the programming sequence with all keys present, re-registered her existing key, and tested every button. Lock, unlock, panic, and the sliding door release. Everything came back in one session, right in the driveway.
She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a new key plus labor, assuming her existing one was dead hardware. It wasn't. The dealer never asked her to bring the car in for a check first. I did it on site for a fraction of what they wanted, and the original key still works fine today.
