2017 Nissan Quest
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long should a replacement key last on a 2017 Quest?

A properly registered Intelligent Key fob should last as long as your original. The programming doesn't degrade. What does wear out over time is the CR2032 cell and occasionally the battery contacts inside the fob. If range starts dropping or the fob gets inconsistent, open it up and check the contacts before assuming the key is failing.

Q: What if the replacement key stops working after a few weeks?

Call us. Every key we make is covered. If it stops starting the van, loses remote function, or throws a key-not-detected warning after we leave, we come back and sort it out. One thing worth knowing on the Quest specifically: owners have reported situations where lock and unlock still work fine from the fob, but the start function drops out. When that happens it's usually not the fob itself.

Q: I have a spare key that works to start the Quest but the Intelligent Key functions don't work at all. What's going on?

This is a known pattern on Nissan Intelligent Key fobs. The transponder side and the remote entry side are handled differently by the system. If the van starts but the doors won't respond to the fob buttons and the touch-unlock on the door handle does nothing, the fob's remote signal is the problem, not the start side. First thing to try: fresh CR2032 and make sure it's seated flat with solid contact on both terminals.

Q: Can I program a second Intelligent Key myself on the 2017 Quest, or do I need a tech?

You need a tech. The 2017 Quest does not have an owner-accessible add-a-key sequence. Registering a new Intelligent Key fob requires diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD port. There's no ignition cycling trick or button sequence that works on this system. If you bought a fob online to save some money, that's fine, but it still needs to be professionally registered before it does anything. Bring it along when you call and we can pair it on-site in Ventura.

2017 Nissan Quest Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from an event planner in a venue parking lot out in Thille. She had a catering setup going, her 2017 Quest was sitting in the loading zone blocking everything, and the Intelligent Key had gone dark on her. Event load-in was two hours out. She wasn't panicking yet, but she was close.

I was there in 25 minutes.

The fob battery was the first thing I checked. CR2032 was reading low. Swapped it, reseated it clean, and tested the fob before I did anything else. Still not starting. That told me the fob needed to be re-registered, so I connected through the OBD port and ran the pairing sequence. The van came back up, doors responded, start button saw the key.

She moved the Quest out of the loading zone with a solid hour and a half to spare. The whole job ran about 20 minutes on-site.

She mentioned the dealer had told her it would be a tow and a next-day appointment. I don't usually make that comparison out loud, but she brought it up herself. Mobile changes the math on that kind of job completely.

Nissan Quest Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys for the 2017 Quest?▼

We use OEM-spec fobs verified to match the factory FCC ID and frequency for the Quest. On Nissan's Intelligent Key system, aftermarket fobs from online marketplaces are hit or miss. Some won't pair at all. Others will pair once and drop registration after a week. Nissan dealers have been known to turn away third-party fobs and refuse to program them, and that's not a policy unique to one store. We only supply fobs we're willing to warranty.
