2009 Nissan Quest
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a remote head key, and why does the 2009 Quest use one?

A remote head key combines the ignition key blade and the keyless entry remote into one unit. The fob portion is built into the head of the key itself, so there's no separate key fob dangling on your ring. Your 2009 Quest uses one with four buttons and a CR1616 battery inside the fob housing. The transponder chip embedded in that same housing communicates with the vehicle's immobilizer every time you turn the key.

Q: Why does Nissan key programming take so long at the dealer if the actual process is short?

It's a workflow problem, not a technical one. The immobilizer registration itself isn't the slow part. What takes time is everything around it: writing up the job, waiting for a tech who's certified on the diagnostic equipment, the tech pulling the vehicle into the bay, running the registration sequence, and then verifying every key function before closing the ticket. Some locations also contact the manufacturer's support line for all-keys-lost situations, which adds a hold time.

Q: I bought a replacement remote head key online. Can I program it myself?

The remote portion of these older Nissan fobs has a self-programming entry sequence that some owners have successfully used. The transponder side is a different story. That chip requires a diagnostic tool connected to the OBD port to register with the immobilizer. No ignition trick handles that part.

Q: My 2009 Quest starts fine but the remote buttons stopped working. Do I need a new key?

Probably not. If the car starts, the transponder is still talking to the immobilizer. The remote and the ignition chip are independent systems inside the same housing. Dead remote, running car usually points to one of three things: a dead or incorrectly seated CR1616 battery, corroded battery contacts inside the fob, or the remote lost its pairing. Start with the battery. The CR1616 is thin and easy to seat crooked.

2009 Nissan Quest Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a man in Dos Vientos who was using his 2009 Quest to get to a dialysis clinic in Thousand Oaks three times a week. Not optional driving.

His one key's remote had stopped working, and he wanted a spare made before the mechanical side gave out on him too. Getting to a dealer, waiting two hours, arranging a ride back if the car had to stay, that wasn't something he could work around.

I came to him.

The Quest uses an older edge-cut blade, so I decoded the lock and cut a fresh key on site. The remote head key for this van has the fob and the ignition key built into one unit, so both functions have to work for it to be worth anything. I programmed the transponder through the OBD port and paired the remote at the same time. Then I tested all four buttons, checked the doors, and verified the engine started clean with both keys before I called it done.

He didn't miss a treatment. Didn't arrange a ride anywhere. The dealer quote he'd gotten over the phone was for one key and didn't include getting the car there in the first place. He got two keys, both fully functional, for a fraction of what they wanted, and I was gone before his next ride showed up.

That's the whole job. Nothing dramatic. Just the right tools, the right place, at the right time.

Nissan Quest Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How long does the Nissan dealer take for key replacement on a 2009 Quest?▼

The actual programming is short once a tech is connected and the key is in hand, maybe 15 minutes of real work. But a dealership visit is rarely just that. There's a repair order, a queue for a certified technician with the right diagnostic equipment, the immobilizer registration process, and a function check before they hand the key back. Dealers block out one to two hour windows for this as a standard appointment, not a walk-in.
