It was a July afternoon over in the College area of Ventura. Guy calls me from a grocery store parking lot. Frozen food in the back, elderly customer, Quest sitting ten feet away and completely locked up. He'd already called the dealer. Next available appointment was the following morning. I popped the concealed door lock cover, got us in with the emergency blade, then took a look at the fob. The CR2032 was completely flat and the battery contact had a slight corrosion spot that had been quietly killing range for a while before it gave out entirely. At that point we were past a simple battery swap. I set him up with a properly matched replacement fob, programmed it through the OBD port, and walked all six buttons plus the sliding doors and the ignition start to confirm everything was talking to the vehicle correctly.
From his phone call to him driving away with cold groceries still cold was 38 minutes. The dealer's quote was a full day away and a lot heavier on the wallet. He didn't say much when it was done. Just loaded his bags and nodded. That was enough.
