Saturday night in Downtown Ventura. A group came out of a Korean BBQ spot to find their 2013 Quest sitting there completely unresponsive. Push-button start was dead. The fob wasn't being recognized at all. They had no idea the fob had a mechanical insert key inside it, so the idea of getting into the car manually hadn't even come up yet. They figured the whole thing was done until Monday and called me half expecting to hear the same thing.
I was fifteen minutes out and already had the right fob for this vehicle stocked in the van. Didn't need to order anything.
When I got there, they'd been standing in the parking lot for about forty minutes. The fob battery was completely flat. Swapped in a fresh CR2032, walked them through the backup start procedure where you hold the fob directly to the start button, and the car fired right up. While it was running I tested all six buttons, walked both sliding doors, and confirmed the push-button start was reading the fob from normal distance. Everything was working the way it should.
I also checked the 12-volt while I was there because a dead fob battery on top of a weak main battery is a combination that comes back around. It was fine.
They drove home that Saturday night. The dealer would have had them towing it in Monday morning and waiting on scheduling. When I'm already stocked for the vehicle, a Saturday night call at ten gets the same result as a Tuesday morning appointment.
