Out in the Cold Spring area of Montecito, there's a dirt staging lot off the canyon road where people unload ATVs and trail gear before heading out. A guy had done exactly that, pulled his quad off the trailer, and somewhere between the tailgate and the trailhead his key had come off the ring. Gone. He walked back, checked everywhere, nothing.
His 2013 Dodge Challenger was sitting in that lot locked up tight. The nearest Dodge dealer was well over an hour away. He called a locksmith first, and that locksmith told him the ignition cylinder would probably need to be drilled and replaced, then quoted him something he didn't want to repeat out loud.
He called me for a second opinion.
I decoded his door lock mechanically, reading the wafer positions without disturbing any of the internal components. That gave me the factory cut depths I needed. I cut a new blade, assembled the fob, and ran the all-keys-lost sequence through the OBD port to register the new key to the vehicle's security system and wipe any stored key data from the old fob he'd lost on the trail.
No drilling. No cylinder swap. His original lock worked with the new key exactly as it always had. He was back on the road while there was still daylight left.
The dealer route would have meant a tow, an appointment he couldn't get that day, and a bill that made the locksmith's drill quote look reasonable. He saved a good chunk, and the car left the lot on its own four wheels.
