Up on Eucalyptus Hill in Montecito, I got a call from a guy who'd been sitting in his driveway for two hours before he reached out. He'd bought his 2014 Challenger used a couple years back, got it with one key, always figured he'd deal with the spare later. Classic plan.

The fob hinge had been creaking for a while. That morning he pushed the blade out, it stuck halfway, and when he forced it the housing cracked clean through at the pivot. The blade made it into the ignition but wouldn't turn. He pulled it back out, or tried to. Part of it stayed in the cylinder.

I got there and the first thing I did was work the fragment out of the ignition. That part makes people nervous to watch. Once it was clear, I checked the fob body. The chip inside was still intact and readable, which was the good news. Because I could pull the transponder data directly from the broken fob, I didn't have to run a full all-keys-lost procedure. That saves real time and real money.

I decoded the lock from the cylinder, cut two new blades, and rebuilt both fobs into fresh housings with the chip transferred into one and a newly programmed unit for the second. Walked every button on both fobs, tested both in the ignition, confirmed the immobilizer accepted them.

He went from zero working keys to two, on his own driveway, in about 45 minutes. The dealer quote he'd looked up out of curiosity while waiting was a lot more than what he paid me. He mentioned it kind of offhand, the way people do when they're relieved they didn't go that route.
