Got called to Fremont North for a Challenger owner who couldn't start his car after work. "Key Fob Not Detected" on the dash, push button wouldn't respond.
He'd already tried the emergency start procedure: foot on brake, press the start button with the fob. Nothing. Turns out he was pressing with the wrong end. The transponder chip sits behind the Dodge logo, not near the buttons like he assumed.
I showed him the right spot and the car fired up. But that's just a bandaid. The real issue was his CR2032 reading 2.7V. These RF Hub modules want a strong signal, and anything under 2.8V gets sketchy. Swapped the battery, cleaned the contacts with isopropyl, and tested all five buttons: lock, unlock, trunk, panic, and remote start.
While I had it open, I checked the transponder chip solder joints on the PCB. The PCF7953 chip looked solid, no cracks or cold joints that plague these after a few years of pocket abuse.
Twenty minutes total, and he had his range back. No more pressing the fob against the button like some weird handshake. The dealer had quoted him a new fob at their usual rate. All he needed was a fresh CR2032 and someone who knew where to look.
