2001 Honda CR-V Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A guy in North Fillmore had been fighting his 2001 CR-V ignition for a few weeks. Not all the way broken, just bad enough to make every morning a project. He'd insert the key, feel it catch on something, wiggle it side to side, maybe push the steering column a little, and eventually it would turn. Sometimes he'd sit there for a minute before it cooperated.
He went to the dealer first. They told him the cylinder was worn out, quoted him a new ignition assembly plus a new key, and said the car would need to be there for the better part of a day. One of his classmates told him to call a locksmith before booking that appointment.
I met him in the parking lot near his place in North Fillmore. Pulled out my decoder and went into the cylinder without touching the ignition switch itself. Three of the wafers were visibly rounded on the edge, one had a small fracture, and two were sitting just loose enough to drag on his key every time. The cylinder itself was fine. The housing was solid, the sidebar moved the way it should, the lock core wasn't cracked. Nothing wrong that required pulling the whole assembly.
I rewaferred the cylinder, cut a fresh key to the new code, and handed it to him. He turned the key twice, looked at me, and said something like "that's what it's supposed to feel like." The old wafers were sitting in my palm and he could see the wear on the edges himself. I didn't have to explain anything. The metal told the story.
He didn't need a new ignition. He needed about forty minutes and someone who could read a worn lock correctly.
