2001 Honda CR-V MECHANICAL-KEY Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Got a call from a guy near the Fillmore Fish Hatchery area. His 2001 CR-V had been giving him grief for weeks. Key would go in, but turning it felt like arm-wrestling the steering column. He'd jiggle, push hard, wait, try again. Some nights after class it took him a solid minute before the cylinder would finally give.
A dealer had already quoted him for a full ignition cylinder replacement, new key, and reprogramming. He was about to book it when someone told him to try a locksmith first.
I got there and pulled the cylinder. The wafers inside were the problem. On these RD-series CR-Vs, the brass wafers wear down over time, especially wafer positions 3 and 5, which see the most lateral load. They get thin, start tilting, and eventually bind against the key blade instead of reading it cleanly. The cylinder housing was fine. The immobilizer module on the dash, Honda part 38460-S10-A01, was fine. Nothing needed a full replacement.
I decoded the existing lock, swapped the worn wafers, and cut a fresh HD103 blade with the T5/ID13 transponder matched to his immobilizer. His separate remote fob, the little A269ZUA101 two-button unit, still worked because I never touched the receiver side. I showed him the old wafers next to new ones so he could see the difference. Paper thin versus solid.
His ignition turns clean now. No wiggle, no fighting. And he kept every part that was still working, which was most of them.
