2005 Honda CR-V Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A family staying near the Santa Paula Theater Center in Santa Paula called me one evening. They were in town for the week, renting a place, and their only 2005 CR-V key had quit locking and unlocking from the remote. They'd already called a Honda dealer, who told them to tow it in and quoted a next-day appointment.
They found me online and I drove out that same night.
I checked their remote head key on the hood of the van. The CR1616 was completely flat. That kills the lock, unlock, and trunk buttons, but the ID46 transponder chip inside the key head is passive, powered by the immobilizer antenna ring around the ignition cylinder. So the car was still starting fine. Their actual problem was remote-only.
Swapped the CR1616, held lock and unlock together for about a second to resync, and all four buttons came back. Then I cut them a spare on my Triton machine right there in the driveway, programmed the new ID46 chip through the OBD port using my VVDI Pro, and handed them a second key so they would not be in this spot again.
The dad just stood there holding both keys like he was weighing them. He said something about how the dealer made it sound like a full day project. It was about 25 minutes, start to finish, in a rental driveway.
