A family staying at a rental in East Area 2 in Santa Paula called me on a Tuesday evening. They had one key for their 2005 CR-V, the original remote head key, and the lock and unlock buttons had stopped responding that afternoon. The car still started, so they figured they'd just deal with it. Then the key itself stopped turning cleanly, and now they were nervous.
The rental host had already given them the dealer's number. The dealer said bring it in, earliest appointment was Thursday, and quoted a number that made them pause. They found me and called.
I pulled up to the rental around 6:30. The key blade had visible wear, which was most of the ignition issue. The fob side was a dead battery, a CR1616 that had probably been sitting in that key for years. I swapped the cell, cut a fresh blade on my machine in the van, and programmed the new key through the OBD port so the immobilizer would accept it alongside any remaining working keys.
The whole thing took about 35 minutes in the driveway. They didn't lose a day waiting for a Thursday slot, didn't need a tow, and paid a fraction of what the dealer quoted. One of them said they didn't know mobile locksmiths even handled this kind of work. Most people don't, until they need it.
