2002 Honda CR-V
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: The Honda dealer told me I have to tow my CR-V in for a new key. Is that actually true?

It's what dealers tell you, but it's not your only option. Dealers require the vehicle on their lot because their equipment is fixed in one place. A mobile locksmith brings the same capability to you. On a 2002 CR-V with no working keys, I can pick the door, decode the lock, cut the key, and program the transponder right where the car is parked. No tow, no drop-off, no waiting two days for a callback.

Q: What do I need to show you before you make me a key?

A valid photo ID and something showing ownership, like your registration or title. I also verify the VIN from the dash plate or the door jamb sticker. Same standard a dealer would hold you to. If your registration is on your phone, that works fine alongside your ID. Just have both ready when I pull up and we can get straight to work.

Q: I bought a replacement transponder key online. Can I program it myself on a 2002 CR-V?

If you already have a working key, there's actually an onboard relearn procedure for this generation of CR-V that can register a second key without any external programmer. The sequence involves the ignition and existing working key. It's documented and owners have done it successfully. If you have no working key at all, that onboard shortcut is off the table. You need a programmer and someone who knows how to run the all-keys-lost procedure.

Q: My 2002 CR-V cranks but won't start. Could it be a transponder problem?

Possibly. On this generation, when the immobilizer doesn't recognize the key, the engine cranks normally but won't fire. A lot of owners assume it's a fuel or ignition issue and start throwing parts at it. Before going down that road, check the security indicator on the dash. If it's flashing or staying lit while you're trying to start, the immobilizer is telling you it rejected the key.

2002 Honda CR-V Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy in Downtown Fillmore, parked in his apartment carport off Central Avenue. He'd dropped his only key on the concrete walkway and the housing cracked.

He thought the key was just cosmetically damaged until the car wouldn't start the next morning. He called the dealer first. They told him to tow it in and quoted him a number that made him hesitate long enough to search for another option.

That's when he found me.

I pulled up to his carport about twenty minutes later. No key at all, so I picked the door and decoded the cuts right from the lock cylinder. Once I had the cut data, I made a replacement key on site and ran the programming through the OBD port. The whole thing took under an hour.

He was standing there watching the whole time. When it fired up on the first turn, he looked at the dash for a second like he was waiting for something to go wrong. It didn't.

He saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer quoted, and he never left the carport.

Honda CR-V Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I'm locked out with no spare. Can you come to me in Downtown Fillmore?▼

Yes, that's exactly the kind of call I handle. No tow truck, no dealer appointment, no trying to arrange a ride across town. I come to wherever the CR-V is sitting, pick the door if needed, and make the key on site. If you're in the Downtown Fillmore area, I can usually be there quickly. One call gets it sorted.
