I got a call from a guy out in River Park, over near the Wagon Wheel end. He had just gotten back from a trip, drove home fine, and then walked out the next morning to a key that would not lock or unlock the doors. The CR-V started, so he drove to get coffee, came back, locked up manually, and then realized he could not pop the rear hatch with the fob either. One button was working, two were not.
He figured it needed a new key, which would have meant a dealer visit and at least a couple of days of waiting.
I pulled up, he handed me the remote head key, and I could already see the cover had been opened before. Someone had swapped the battery at some point and the CR1616 was sitting slightly off-center, barely making contact with the positive clip. The transponder was fine. The key was fine. It was just a seating issue.
I seated the battery correctly, verified the clip contact was not bent, closed it up, and tested all three buttons from across the parking lot. Lock, unlock, third button, all working. Then I had him try it himself a few times, because I have learned that some people need to hear the click with their own hand before they trust it.
He had called the dealer before calling me. They told him to bring it in, leave it for the day, and they would take a look. He saved himself the trip and a day without his car, for what turned out to be a two-minute fix on-site.
