2005 Infiniti M45
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What kind of key does the 2005 Infiniti M45 actually use?

A metal turn key. It fits an ignition cylinder and a door lock, and that's the system. No remote buttons, no battery, no fob to replace or program. Replacement means cutting a new blade to match your vehicle's lock configuration, either from the key code or by decoding a working lock on the car. The key blade is the whole part.

Q: How does a mobile locksmith compare to the dealer for this job?

For a mechanical key vehicle like the 2005 M45, the dealer option usually means scheduling an appointment, potentially towing the car if you're locked out or have no working key, and paying their shop rate for something a mobile locksmith handles in a parking spot or your own driveway. The technical work is the same: cut a key to fit your vehicle. The difference is overhead.

Q: I have a working key but the ignition feels stiff and the key is hard to turn. Do I need a new ignition or just a new key?

On a 2005 M45, a stiff ignition is usually wear in the cylinder wafers, not a key problem. But a worn key can accelerate that wear because the blade no longer rides the wafers cleanly. If your key looks chewed up at the cuts, get a fresh one made first and test the feel before assuming the cylinder needs work. A key cut directly from code sits in the cylinder better than a worn copy of a copy.

Q: Can I get a replacement key made without having the original?

Yes. All-keys-lost on a 2005 M45 is a routine job. There are a few ways to approach it: pull the key code from the door lock cylinder by decoding it on site, or in some cases retrieve a code through the vehicle's records if the previous owner registered it. Either path gets to a working key without the original. Bring whatever documentation you have for the vehicle when you call, especially if the car isn't in your immediate possession.

2005 Infiniti M45 Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from someone up in Mission Canyon on a weekday morning. Steep driveway, lots of oak shade, the kind of street where the houses are tucked back and you almost miss the address.

He'd been driving the M45 since he bought it used a few years back. One key, which he knew was a bad idea but never got around to fixing. Then he snapped it. Not lost, not locked inside. Snapped. The blade sheared off right at the shoulder, probably from metal fatigue after years of a heavy keychain pulling on it every time the car sat.

Half the blade was still in the ignition cylinder.

That part came first. I extracted the broken piece with a plug follower and a broken key extractor. Took maybe six minutes. No damage to the cylinder, which matters on a car this age because those wafers are not easy to source.

Once the cylinder was clear, I decoded it right there, cut a new key to match, and tested it. Turned clean on the first try.

He asked what the dealer would have wanted for the same job. I told him a dealer visit would have meant a tow, a wait for a tech, and probably a parts order. He just nodded. The math was obvious without me saying a number.

He asked for two keys that morning. Smart call, years too late, but he made it.

Infiniti M45 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Why does key replacement for a 2005 Infiniti M45 feel so expensive at the dealer?▼

Part of it is labor rate, part of it is the service desk upselling a tow if you're stranded. For this specific vehicle, though, the job is simpler than the dealer's ticket implies. The 2005 M45 uses a mechanical turn key. There's no intelligent key system, no fob pairing, no diagnostic sequence required. The cost at a dealer comes from their flat minimum labor charges, not from actual technical complexity.
