2005 Kia Sorento
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long does the job actually take once you get to my car?

On a 2005 Sorento, it's a short job. I decode the lock, confirm the cut, and make the key. You're usually looking at fifteen to twenty minutes at the vehicle. No programming sequence, no relearn timer, no waiting on a confirmation from a module. The key is cut, it works, and you're done. All-keys-lost is no different on this one. There's no key memory to wipe.

Q: Can you make a key faster than the dealer?

On this vehicle, it's not even close. A dealer has to write up a repair order, get a tech assigned, and potentially order a key blank if they don't have one in stock. That process can stretch across multiple days. The actual cutting, once someone gets to it, takes minutes. But you don't see those minutes. You see the wait. We skip all of that.

Q: I had a copy made at a hardware store and it doesn't work right. What happened?

Hardware store cuts on automotive keys miss more often than people expect. The machines they use are worn, the staff aren't trained on automotive blanks specifically, and they're working off your existing key rather than the actual lock. If your original key was already slightly worn, the copy comes out worse, not the same. A proper automotive cut starts from the lock itself or from the key code, not from tracing a worn key.

Q: My key turns but the ignition feels stiff. Is that a key problem or an ignition problem?

Could be either. On a vehicle this age, ignition cylinders wear. If the key is a worn copy, it can feel stiff in a cylinder that would turn fine with a properly cut key. Worth ruling out the key first since that's the cheaper fix. If a freshly cut key still binds, the cylinder itself may need attention. I've seen both on older Sorentos.

2005 Kia Sorento Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a woman in Marina West whose daughter had found me online. She was older, lived alone, and her 2005 Kia Sorento was sitting in her gravel driveway with no key. Not a broken key, not a lost fob. Just gone. She had no idea where it went and she had no spare.

The nearest Kia dealer was well over an hour away. She had no way to get the car there, and even if she did, she told me the person she spoke with said they'd have to order a key and call her back when it arrived. That timeline wasn't going to work for her.

I loaded up the van and drove out to Marina West. The Sorento was right where she said it would be, parked in the driveway, doors locked. I decoded the lock cylinder, got the cut, and made her a new key on site. The whole thing took maybe twenty minutes from the time I pulled up.

She walked out, put the key in the door, turned it, and then turned it in the ignition. Started right up. She held the key for a second like she was making sure it was real.

No tow, no wait, no multi-day dealer queue. Just a key cut to her car, done in her driveway.

Kia Sorento Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a key made after hours or on the weekend?▼

Dealer service departments keep their own hours, and most of them aren't working Saturday evening or Sunday morning. If your key situation happens outside that window, you're sitting until they reopen, and then you're getting in line behind everyone else who called before you. We work outside those hours. If you're in Marina West or anywhere in Oxnard and you need a key made on a weekend or after five, one call gets you on the schedule.
