Got the call while I was already near Ventura Pier. 2025 Sorento owner standing next to his SUV, holding a dead TQ8-FOB-4F61M44 smart key like it betrayed him.
"Battery's new," he said. "Changed it yesterday."
The CR2450 was fresh but the key still wouldn't register. Dashboard kept throwing "Smart Key not detected" even with the fob right on the start button. He'd already called the dealer. They wanted the car towed in, three-day wait minimum.
I popped the fob case to check contacts first. Clean. Connected my IM608 Pro through OBD and pulled codes: B1673 stored in the BCM. That's the telltale for corrupted key data, not a dead battery issue.
The fix needed a full key relearn with PIN access. Since Kia locked down OBD PIN reading on 2025 models, I ran it through AutoAuth for the 6-digit code. Cleared the BCM fault, erased the corrupted key slot, then did a fresh registration. Hold fob to start button, wait for the chime, done.
All five buttons tested good: lock, unlock, trunk, panic, remote start. No more error messages. He saved himself the tow fee and whatever markup the dealer had planned. Took me 35 minutes standing right there by the pier parking.
