2017 Kia Sorento
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long will a replacement key last?

A properly programmed replacement should hold up as long as your original. The programming itself does not wear out or degrade. Where these fobs actually fail over time is physical: the battery contacts can develop corrosion, or the internal board can shift if the housing cracks from being dropped. The CR2032 in the 2017 Sorento fob should be swapped every two to three years before it gets low enough to cause erratic behavior.

Q: What if the new key stops working after a few weeks?

Call us. We back up our work. If the key loses remote function, won't start the car, or acts erratic after we've programmed it, we come back and sort it out. We test every function before we leave the job, but if something surfaces later, that's on us to fix. The risk with buying a key online or using someone who won't stand behind the work is that when something goes wrong, there's nobody to call.

Q: I have one working Sorento key. Can I get a spare added without losing the original?

Yes, and this is actually the easier scenario. When at least one working key is present, the job is a standard add-a-key process. The existing fob stays registered and functional. The new key gets enrolled alongside it. All-keys-lost is a longer job because it requires a full security reset with a timed sequence built into the process before any new key can be registered.

Q: My Sorento starts fine but the fob buttons stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Not necessarily. If the car still starts, the key is communicating with the vehicle. Dead buttons are usually a battery or contact issue, not a programming failure. Swap the CR2032 first, and when you seat the new one, press it firmly into the contacts. If one button works and others don't, that points to a worn rubber button pad on the fob shell rather than anything electronic. Shells can be replaced without reprogramming the internals.

2017 Kia Sorento Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call at 6:15 in the morning from a framing contractor at a lumber yard in Thousand Oaks. His crew was already on site waiting for materials. He had forced his Sorento's key into the ignition and snapped the blade at the pivot point. Half the blade was stuck inside the cylinder. Nobody was going anywhere.

I keep my van stocked and ready before 6am. I was at the yard in about 20 minutes.

The fragment hadn't damaged the wafers, which was the first good sign. I extracted it clean using a Lishi-style pick, then decoded the lock mechanically and cut a fresh blade on site. Because this is a smart key setup, the new blade also needed to be paired to the vehicle through the OBD port. That part added a few minutes but nothing dramatic.

He was loaded and heading to the job site by 7am. Thirty minutes of hands-on work. No tow, no waiting room, no crew sitting idle billing hours while a dealer's service department works through their morning queue.

He mentioned what the dealer quoted him over the phone when he first called around. I told him what I charged. He just nodded and said "yeah, figured."

Kia Sorento Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on Kia vehicles?▼

We use OEM-spec blanks matched to your specific vehicle before we ever leave for your location. On the 2017 Sorento smart key system, aftermarket fobs have a real track record of causing problems. Owners on Kia forums report intermittent proximity detection failures and inconsistent range with off-brand fobs, and some aftermarket blanks simply do not complete the pairing process cleanly. Dealers in many cases will not program a third-party key at all.
