I got a call from a guy in North Ranch, one of those hillside streets off the canyon where the road narrows down to one lane and there's nowhere for a tow truck to turn around. He had a 2011 Kia Sorento parked nose-in on a steep grade, and his fob had completely stopped responding. The dealer told him he needed to get the vehicle to them first. I replaced the battery, reseated the contact clips in the housing, and then connected to the OBD port to verify the fob was still paired to the immobilizer. It was. The fob came right back. Lock, unlock, and the other buttons all responding, handle sensors working, start button reading the key normally.
He hadn't needed a full replacement. Just a proper diagnosis done at the car instead of a service bay two towns away with a two-week wait attached to it. The car never moved. He walked back inside.
