2011 Kia Sorento Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A graphic designer in the Casa Conejo neighborhood of Thousand Oaks called me because his 2011 Sorento SX was stuck on a steep one-lane hillside street with no turnout. No working smart key. The dealer told him he needed to get the car towed in first. A tow truck driver had already turned around at the bottom of the hill because there was no room to maneuver.
I parked my van at the base of the street and walked up with my kit.
His original SY5HMFNA04 fob had stopped communicating entirely. The dash just showed "Key is not detected" every time he pressed the start button. He had been holding the fob against the start button to get it going for weeks, which is the emergency backup method Kia buried on page 49 of the owner's manual. Then even that quit working.
I used my VVDI2 to pull the PIN from the SMARTRA module through the OBD port, registered a fresh smart key, and cut the emergency insert blade on site using my HY22 Lishi to decode the door cylinder. Tested all four buttons, passive entry on both front handles, and push-to-start with the fob in my back pocket, then in the center console, then in the cargo area.
His car never moved from that hillside. The whole job took about 40 minutes. He just sat on his front steps and watched.
