2020 Kia Sorento
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long should a replacement smart key last on a 2020 Sorento?

A properly programmed key on this vehicle should last as long as your original. The programming itself doesn't degrade. The most common wear point is the physical fob housing, not the electronics. If the shell cracks or a button pad tears, the internal components can often be transferred to a new housing without any reprogramming at all. The CR2032 battery is the one thing you'll replace on a regular schedule.

Q: What if the replacement key starts acting up after a few weeks?

Call us. We back our work. If the key loses remote function, stops starting the car, or behaves inconsistently after we've programmed it, we come back out and make it right. That warranty is part of the job, not an add-on. This matters because intermittent failures do happen, and the worst situation is being stuck with a fob that works sometimes while the person who programmed it isn't reachable.

Q: I lost both keys for my 2020 Sorento. Can you still make a new one?

Yes, and this is one of the more involved jobs on this generation. When all keys are lost, the vehicle security system has to be reset through the diagnostic port before any new key can be registered. The existing key memory gets cleared, and the replacement fob gets enrolled fresh. It takes longer than a spare-key job because of the reset sequence, but it's a standard procedure with the right equipment.

Q: The Sorento shows a key-not-detected warning but the fob battery is fine. What's going on?

A few things can cause this even with a good battery. The antenna that reads the fob inside the cabin can have a wiring issue, and Sorento owners on forums have noted that the warning sometimes appears after interior work where a connector got nudged. It can also come up if the fob took a hard drop and the internal board shifted slightly in the housing. First step: try the hold-to-button backup start method.

2020 Kia Sorento Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

It was a Saturday night in Downtown Ventura. A couple came out of a sushi spot and their 2020 Sorento wouldn't respond. Fob did nothing. Push-to-start sat there dark.

Neither of them knew about the backup start method where you hold the fob directly against the start button when the battery is too low to transmit. They were ready to leave the car overnight and deal with it Monday.

I was about fifteen minutes out. The CR2032 in the fob was completely drained. I swapped it on the hood of the car, walked them through the hold-to-button trick so they'd know it for next time, then ran a quick check to confirm the fob was registering correctly and all four buttons were reading clean.

First press after the battery swap, the car started right up.

They didn't need a new fob or a tow or a Monday dealer appointment. The dealer route would have meant waiting out the weekend and spending a lot more than they paid me. When you stock the right parts and keep the tools in the van, a Saturday night call isn't a crisis.

Kia Sorento Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket smart keys for the 2020 Sorento?▼

We're careful here. On a 2020 Sorento, the smart key system is not forgiving of low-quality aftermarket fobs. Owners on Kia forums have reported proximity detection issues with certain aftermarket blanks on this generation, and some aftermarket fobs fail intermittently even after clean programming. Dealers commonly refuse to program third-party fobs, and there are cases where an aftermarket shell programs fine at first but drifts out of reliable range within months.
