Saturday night near Ventura Promenade, a couple finishing dinner walked back to their 2020 Kia Sorento and got nothing. Pressed the start button, dash lit up "Key is Not Detected," doors would not lock from the handle. They assumed the car was broken and were about to leave it overnight.
I was already in Ventura, about 15 minutes out. Had the right HY22 laser blank and a fresh TQ8-FOB-4F06 shell stocked in the van.
When I got there, I checked the original fob first. CR2032 was dead flat, which explained the range loss and the start failure. But here is the part that would have cost them a weekday trip to the dealer: even after a new battery, the fob had lost its registration to the BCM. That happens sometimes on these third-gen Sorentos when the battery sits dead long enough.
I ran the reprogram through the OBD port, re-paired the fob to the immobilizer, then walked every button. Lock, unlock, hatch, panic. Tested handle touch from both front doors. Start button caught on the first press, engine turned right over.
The whole thing took maybe 25 minutes. They drove home that night instead of calling a rideshare and dealing with a dealer service department on Monday. The guy just stood there and watched his wife start the car twice, like he was waiting for it to quit again.
A dead battery that cascaded into a registration drop. Common on these, quick fix when you have the tools on hand.
