Out in Erbes Road Estates, I got a call from a guy who had already been to the dealer and come back empty-handed on timing.

His 2015 Kia Sorento was sitting in the driveway, fully locked, and both of his smart fobs had gone dark on the same week. One had been acting up for a month. The other he admitted had been in a cup holder full of old coffee at some point.

He'd tried the battery trick on his own. Fresh CR2032 in each one, still nothing. Dash was showing a key-not-detected warning every time he got close to the car.

The other one was actually fine electronically. The problem there was that when he swapped the battery himself, he'd slightly bent one of the internal contacts and the new cell wasn't making a solid connection. I straightened it, reseated the battery, and that fob came back.

So now we had one working fob and one that needed to be replaced and registered to the car. I pulled up the programming sequence through the OBD port, registered the new fob alongside the surviving original, and verified every button on both units before I closed anything up.
