I got a call from a woman in Newbury Park, out near the shops off Wendy Drive. She'd locked her spare inside the house and her only fob had been sitting in a cup holder for who knows how long. Clicked it once in the parking lot and got nothing. She assumed it was dead dead.
When I pulled up she handed me the fob and said she was ready to hear a bad number. First thing I did was crack it open on the hood of my van and check the battery. CR2032, original from the look of it. I swapped in a fresh one, seated it right, and handed it back.
She clicked lock. Nothing. Unlock. Nothing.
That's when it gets interesting. The fob itself was fine electronically, but it had dropped its pairing with the vehicle security system. Happens sometimes when a battery runs completely flat on these. The fob loses its registration and the car just stops seeing it as a valid key.
I hooked up the diagnostic equipment, pulled up the 2012 Sorento key system, and ran the add-a-key procedure since she still technically had the one fob present. Re-registered it, cycled the doors, walked every button. Lock, unlock, and both of the remaining functions all came back. Start button recognized it immediately.
She said she'd been putting off calling because she figured it would cost her a whole afternoon and a dealer bill. It was maybe 25 minutes in a parking lot in Newbury Park, and she drove off with a working key and a plan to get a spare made before it happened again.
The dealer comparison came up on its own. She'd called them first. They told her to bring it in, leave it, and come back the next day.
