2009 Nissan Titan
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long should a replacement key hold up on a 2009 Titan?

A properly programmed remote-head key should hold up as long as the original did. The programming itself doesn't degrade. What actually wears out on these over time is the battery contact inside the fob, especially if the CR1620 ever got swapped in with a bit of force. The contact tab bends slightly, the new battery sits loose, and you get intermittent remote function that looks like a programming issue but isn't.

Q: What if the replacement key stops working after a few weeks?

Call me. Everything I program is covered under warranty. If the remote loses range, the key stops communicating with the immobilizer, or you see a key-not-detected warning when you didn't before, I come back and sort it out. That coverage is something you don't get from a key bought online or from a shop that's already moved on to the next job.

Q: All three remotes on my Titan stopped working at the same time. Is that even possible?

It is, and it's one of the more confusing things that comes up with these trucks. When multiple fobs all fail together while the key still starts the engine fine, that points away from the fobs themselves and toward the receiver module in the cab. The remote entry receiver handles all wireless signal processing, and if it goes, every fob looks dead simultaneously.

Q: Can I add a second key to my 2009 Titan myself, or do I need a tech?

There is an onboard procedure for adding a key to this generation Titan, but it has a catch: you need at least one already-working programmed key to initiate the sequence. If you have one good key and want to add a spare, a self-programming routine may be available using the ignition and the existing key in a specific cycle.

2009 Nissan Titan Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

It was July, College Area in Ventura, and the guy had a bed full of groceries. Frozen stuff. He'd walked out of the store, hit the fob, nothing happened. Tried it again standing right next to the door. Nothing. He'd driven the Titan to the store just fine, but now the remote was completely dead and he was standing in a parking lot watching the clock on his ice cream.

He called the dealer first. Next available was the following morning. Then he found me.

I was there in under fifteen minutes. Got the door open, took a look at the fob. The CR1620 was shot, but swapping the battery didn't bring it back. The internal contact had a layer of corrosion on it, the kind that builds up slowly over years until one hot afternoon it just gives up entirely. The fob shell itself had a hairline crack along the seam where the battery door meets the case, and moisture had gotten in at some point.

I replaced the whole fob, programmed it through the OBD port, and walked every function: lock, unlock, the third button, and remote range out to a reasonable distance in an open lot.

His frozen food made it home. He mentioned the dealer quote when I was wrapping up, kind of in passing. I just nodded. The number wasn't close.

Nissan Titan Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on the 2009 Titan?▼

We use OEM-specification fobs and key blanks verified to work with this truck. On the 2009 Titan, the remote-head key has to match on three levels: the blade cut, the transponder, and the remote frequency. Aftermarket fobs from online marketplaces can come with the wrong battery holder depth, inconsistent contact plating, or a shell that fits loosely and lets the battery rattle.
