Out near the Ventura River Trail, a guy was standing next to his 2016 Titan with a bag of groceries visible through the back window. July heat. He said the frozen stuff had maybe 30 minutes before it turned into a science experiment.
His Intelligent Key had just quit. No response from the door handles, no chirp, nothing. He tried holding the fob against the start button for the backup procedure, but the dash just flashed "KEY ID INCORRECT" and sat there.
He called the dealer. Earliest appointment was the following afternoon. Then he found my number.
I got there in about 15 minutes. Opened the door with a Lishi NSN14 pick, plugged the IM608 into the OBD-II port, and pulled up the NATS module. His fob, the KR5S180144014 with the 285E3-3JA2A housing, had a completely dead CR2032. That part was obvious. The less obvious part was the internal battery contact inside the fob. It had a thin green crust of corrosion right where the negative terminal sits. Even with a fresh battery, that fob was not going to talk to anything.
I replaced the fob, programmed the new one through OBD, and walked the full test. Remote lock, unlock, panic, remote start, push-button start, and range check from about 30 feet out. Everything came back clean.
From phone call to engine running was 38 minutes. His groceries survived. The dealer would have had him waiting until the next day, and for a good chunk more than what he paid me.
