I was parked down at Ventura Harbor on a Tuesday afternoon when the call came in. Guy at a smog shop off the main strip. He'd hired another locksmith to do a key replacement on his 2011 Titan, the battery in the truck sagged during programming, and the security module went into a fault state mid-handshake. The other tech packed up and left him there.
The smog shop called me because they didn't know who else to try.
When I got there, the truck wouldn't respond to any key at all. Not a great sight. The previous attempt had started a registration sequence, lost power halfway through, and now the module was sitting in a state it didn't know how to exit on its own. Some locksmiths walk away from that. I don't, because I've seen it before.
First move was stabilizing the battery with my jump pack before touching anything else. Power stability during a security handshake isn't optional, it's the whole job. Once I had a clean, steady supply, I cleared the fault state through the OBD port with my scan tool, confirmed the module was back to a receptive condition, and ran a fresh programming sequence from scratch. The new remote-head key registered on the first attempt.
I walked through every function before I handed it back. Blade in the ignition, starts clean. Lock, unlock, and the remaining button, all responding at normal range. Done.
The whole job ran close to an hour and a half, longer than a clean first-attempt job takes. That extra time was cleanup from what the previous tech left behind. The customer had already been quoted a number by the dealer that was well above what he paid me, and that was before the dealer even knew about the fault state, which would have added diagnostic time on top.
The smog shop manager watched the whole thing. He said he'd be keeping my number.
