My key broke in the ignition. Can you get it out?

Yes, broken key extraction is a standard call for us. We use extraction tools designed to pull the broken piece out without damaging the ignition cylinder. One thing to know about the Titan specifically: the ignition cylinder on these trucks is not the cheapest or fastest part to replace if the wafers get damaged during or after a break, so getting the extraction done cleanly the first time matters. Once the piece is out, we can decode the cut from the fragment or pull it from the vehicle's lock data and cut a new key on site. If the cylinder took damage, we'll tell you straight and go over your options before doing anything else.

What exactly is a smart key and how does the 2019 Titan's work?

The smart key on your Titan is a fob that handles two separate jobs. The remote side handles lock, unlock, and the other buttons wirelessly. The transponder side communicates with the immobilizer when you press the start button, authorizing the engine to run. Those two functions register independently, which is why a botched programming job can leave you with one working and the other dead.

The fob also contains a mechanical emergency blade tucked inside. If the battery is completely gone and the backup start method isn't working, that blade can operate the door lock cylinder directly. It's easy to forget that's in there.

If the fob housing cracks or the blade snaps but the electronics are still intact, the internals can sometimes be moved into a new shell. If everything is gone, we cut and program a complete replacement on site.

Question 3

My Titan is showing a key-not-detected warning. What should I do?

Start with the battery. The fob takes a CR2032, and a weak one will trigger that warning before it fully dies. Swap it out first.

If you've already done that and it's still happening, try the backup method: hold the fob body directly against the start button and press with your foot on the brake. The truck has a passive reader in the button housing for exactly this situation.

Also check the battery contacts inside the fob while you have it open. Nissan owners on the forums report that the contacts can develop a slight film or lose their spring tension over time, and a new battery in a dirty contact tray doesn't always fix the problem. Wipe the contacts clean and make sure the battery sits flat and firm.

If none of that gets you running, the issue could be the fob itself, the antenna ring around the start button, or the vehicle's own battery running low enough to affect the security system. That's when it's time to call us rather than keep guessing.

I bought a replacement fob online for my 2019 Titan. Can I program it myself?

No. The Nissan Intelligent Key system on this truck does not have a DIY add-a-key sequence. There is no ignition-turn pattern or button combo that registers a new fob. Programming requires a diagnostic tool that communicates with the vehicle's security system through the OBD port. If you already bought the fob, that's fine, you just still need a locksmith or dealer with the right equipment to pair it. Bring the fob with you when you call.

Can the 2019 Titan store more than one key, and do the old fobs get wiped if I add a new one?

The Titan's system can hold multiple registered keys at once. When we add a key the standard way, existing registered fobs stay active.

The situation changes on an all-keys-lost job. When every key is gone and we have to do a full security reset to get back in, the process clears all previously registered fobs from the system as part of the procedure. Any old key that might still be floating around out there, lost in a couch or wherever, gets erased and can no longer start the truck. That's actually a good thing from a security standpoint. After the reset, we register the new key or keys and you're back to normal. That full reset process is the one that takes closer to 60 to 90 minutes because of the timed sequence involved.
