Got a call from a guy out in the Alta Mesa area of Santa Barbara. He was at a winery tasting room early morning, there for a distributor meeting. His 1999 Porsche 911 was sitting in the gravel lot and the key blade turned the ignition but the engine wouldn't catch. Immobilizer was rejecting the transponder.
He called the Porsche dealer first. Earliest slot was the following week. Then he found me and I told him I was about 40 minutes out.
His 996 ran the KR55WK45022 flip key with an HU66 blade and ID46 chip inside. I pulled the immobilizer PIN through OBD using my Smart Pro, then dug into the key itself. The transponder antenna coil had a hairline crack. That's the kind of thing that fails intermittently for a while, then just quits. Remote buttons still locked and unlocked the doors fine, so he assumed the key was healthy. It wasn't.
Wrote a fresh transponder code to match the immobilizer, tested ignition cycle three times cold, confirmed remote lock and unlock range from across the lot. He was back inside for his meetings on schedule.
The whole thing took less than an hour on gravel next to a row of wine barrels. The dealer would have had him waiting days just for an appointment, plus a tow to get there.
