Over in Moorpark near the High Street Arts Center, a real estate broker flagged me down on what was supposed to be a quick turnaround. He had property tours lined up back to back, and his 2000 Porsche 911 had just quit recognizing the key. The car would crank all day long but refuse to start. Classic immobilizer lockout behavior on the 996.
He had already called the dealer. Three business days, minimum. Plus a flatbed, because the car wasn't going anywhere on its own.
I got to the lot and pulled out my VVDI Prog to read the instrument cluster EEPROM. On the 996, the immobilizer data lives in that cluster, so you read the chip, extract the PIN and secret key bytes, then match them to a fresh transponder through OBD. His old flip key, the KR55WK45022 housing with the Megamos ID48 glass capsule inside, had a cracked transponder from being dropped on a court surface. The remote buttons still worked fine, which is why he thought the key was good. But the immobilizer side was dead.
I cut a new flip key blank, seated a fresh ID48 chip, programmed it to the cluster, and tested start. Whole thing took about an hour in the parking lot.
He pulled out heading to his first showing. No flatbed. No three-day wait. Just a guy with the right tools at the right curb.
