It was a Friday night, close to 10:30, and I was already in the area wrapping up another call near Downtown Moorpark when my phone rang.
A couple had walked out from a spot near the old downtown strip and their 2005 Porsche 911 was sitting completely unresponsive to the fob. No lock, no unlock, nothing. They had been pressing the buttons for five minutes. One of them was convinced the car had an electrical fault. The other was already looking up tow companies.
I asked one question: when did you last change the battery in that key? Long pause.
I pulled up in about fifteen minutes. The fob housing had a hairline crack along the seam where the blade pivots, which is exactly where these tend to split after years of being tossed on a counter. The crack had let just enough moisture in to corrode one of the battery contacts. The remote was completely dead. The blade was fine, so at least they could have gotten in and started the car manually, but nobody had told them that was an option.
I swapped in a fresh battery, cleaned the contact points, and tested the remote functions at the car. Everything came back immediately. The immobilizer read the key correctly and the engine started on the first turn. I documented the key configuration before I closed up the van, which takes maybe two minutes but matters if something ever needs to be revisited later.
They had already mentally resigned themselves to a Monday dealer appointment. What they got instead was a drive home that same night, for a fraction of what the dealer conversation would have cost them even before labor.
