A retired airline captain was sitting at the waterfront brunch spot near Channel Islands Beach in Oxnard on a Sunday morning when he called me. He'd already been burned by another locksmith. Paid full price for a 2017 Porsche 911 smart key replacement that never actually programmed right. The car would crank, run for about two seconds, then the immobilizer cut fuel. Classic half-learned key behavior.
The other tech told him the KESSY module was bad and left.
The KESSY module was fine. What happened was a locksmith problem, not a module problem. The 991.2 immobilizer requires PIN/CS (component security) codes calculated from the KESSY data and written to the new key in the correct encrypted format. Skip a step or run the wrong software revision and the key looks registered in the system but never fully learns. The car sees it, cranks, then kills it.
I connected through the OBD port with my IM608, cleared the failed key data from the previous attempt, pulled fresh KESSY data, computed clean codes, and wrote a proper key file to a new KR55WK50138 fob. All five buttons working, push-to-start with no fuel cutoff, blade cut and tested in the driver door. I showed him the confirmation screen so he could see the key was fully learned this time.
He'd already paid the first guy, and I could not undo that. But I could make sure the job was actually done right, on site in Oxnard, for a good chunk less than the dealer route.
