An independent Porsche shop near Happy Camp Canyon Regional Park in Moorpark called me mid-afternoon. They had a customer's 2007 911 Carrera up on the lift with the rear suspension torn apart, and the only key had gotten kicked under a rolling toolbox and dropped straight down a shop floor drain. I pulled up, plugged my VVDI2 into the OBD port, and ran the VAG login to pull the immobilizer PIN from the instrument cluster. The 997.1 uses a standard Megamos ID46 crypto chip, so generating and programming a fresh TP22 transponder was clean and quick. Cut the HU66 blade by decoding the passenger door cylinder with a Lishi pick, assembled the new 3-button flip key, and had the flat-six firing in about 30 minutes total.
The shop finished the suspension work. The customer picked up on time with a fresh key and never knew there was a problem.
That same key through the Porsche dealer would have meant towing the car off the lift, waiting days for the part to come in, and paying a good chunk more for the privilege. The shop owner just wanted it handled before his customer walked in. That's the part I like about these calls.
