2019 Porsche 911
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a mechanical key, and what does that mean for getting a replacement?

A mechanical key is a metal key that operates by its physical cut alone -- it turns the lock cylinder and the ignition barrel because the blade profile matches the internal tumblers. That is the whole security mechanism on this particular key type. Replacement means cutting a new blade to your vehicle. We do that by decoding the lock or sourcing the key code through proper channels, then cutting on site.

Q: My 2019 Porsche 911 won't start and I'm not sure if it's a key problem. Where do I start?

First thing: check that the key is fully inserted and turning cleanly. A worn key blade or a worn ignition cylinder can cause hard spots or incomplete contact. If the key turns but the car doesn't respond, that is a different conversation about the ignition system, not the key itself.

Q: I lost my only key. Can you still make a replacement without the original?

Yes. All-keys-lost on a mechanical key vehicle is a standard job. We decode the lock cylinder directly, which gives us the cut information we need to produce a working key without the original ever being present. No key to copy -- no problem. Bring proof of ownership and a valid ID, and we can do the work on site in South Bank or wherever the car is.

Q: My key turns hard in the ignition and feels like it's wearing down. Is that a key problem or an ignition problem?

Could be both, and they feed each other. A worn key blade develops rounded edges and starts cutting the ignition tumblers unevenly over time. That accelerates wear on the cylinder itself. If you are noticing the key binding, sticking, or requiring more force than it used to, get a replacement cut made from the original code before the worn key damages the cylinder further. Replacing a key is a short job.

2019 Porsche 911 Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy from the South Bank area called me on a Saturday morning. He kept boats near the marina, drove a 2019 Porsche 911, and had snapped his only key off in the door lock after a late night on the water. Not bent, not cracked -- snapped clean at the shoulder.

He had already called the dealer. They told him Monday, earliest, and quoted a number that made him pause. A neighbor suggested he look up a mobile locksmith and he found me through YouTube. He mentioned he had watched a few of my videos before he ever needed anything, which is exactly the kind of call I like. He already understood what the job actually looked like.

I drove out to South Bank, extracted the broken key section from the lock, and decoded the cut from the lock cylinder itself. Then I cut a replacement key blade on site to match. The door opened. The ignition turned. He was back on his schedule before noon.

He compared it to what the dealer had quoted him, shook his head a little, and said he wished he had saved my number sooner. I get that a lot.

Porsche 911 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

My key shell is cracking around the key ring loop. Can you replace just the shell without any reprogramming?▼

On a vehicle with a mechanical key, the shell is the key -- there is no circuit board or remote electronics to transfer. If the metal blade is intact and undamaged, the fix is cutting a new key to match the existing cut. No programming involved. If the blade itself is worn or cracked, we decode the original or the lock and cut fresh. Shell swaps on mechanical keys are just about having the right blank and the right cut.
