Over on the Collins Drive corridor in Moorpark, a 911 owner called me about three hours before a charity gala at a local country club. She was the event coordinator. The car was parked at the entrance with a trunk full of auction items and the key would not start it.
She had already tried the Porsche dealer. Closed for the day. I was about 20 minutes out.
First thing I did was get the door open and make sure the auction stuff was safe. Then I pulled the flip key apart on the hood. The KR55WK45022 board had a cracked solder joint on the transponder connection, the kind of failure you get from one good drop onto a hard surface. The Hitag2 chip was fine, the board just was not talking to it anymore.
I moved the working chip into a fresh key housing, cut the blade to match her 997 profile, and programmed through the OBD port using my IM608. The Bosch ME7.8 DME accepted the new key cleanly. I tested remote lock, unlock, trunk release, and ran the start cycle twice.
From her phone call to engine running was 48 minutes. She made the gala, greeted donors, ran the auction on time. Nobody at the event knew there had been a problem with the car.
The dealer would have been a longer wait and a bigger bill whenever they could fit her in.
