Down at Fisherman's Wharf at the Harbor in Oxnard, a woman called me from the parking area near the boats. Her kid had just been discharged from the children's hospital earlier that evening and they had stopped so she could pick something up. Her 2004 RAV4 remote was completely dead. Pressing the buttons did nothing. No click from the doors, no blink from the lights.

I got there and popped the remote open on the hood. The CR2032 had leaked just enough to leave a film of white corrosion across the battery contacts inside the 08191-00922 housing. That film was blocking current to the 315 MHz transmitter board. Cleaned both contact points, dropped in a fresh CR2032, and tested lock, unlock, and panic. All three responded clean.
Then I checked the mechanical side. Key blade into the ignition, turned it, engine fired. The 4C transponder chip in the blade was reading fine through the immobilizer antenna ring around the ignition cylinder. That system was never the problem.
From the time she called to the time she was driving out of there was about 45 minutes. She had a tired, sick kid in the back seat and one less thing sitting on her. The dealer would have meant waiting until morning and paying a lot more for the same outcome.
