Near the library in Samarkand, a guy flagged me down after a frustrating week with his 2015 RAV4. He'd already paid another locksmith for a new smart key. Then I did what you always do after: walked every button, checked the door handle touch unlock on both sides, and let the engine idle long enough to know the fuel wasn't cutting out.

The engine ran. No stall. He stood there with his arms crossed just waiting for it to die again, because that's what it had done all week.

It didn't die.

He asked what was different. I showed him the confirmation screen on the tool, the one that shows the key is permanently registered, not just attempted. That's the screen the first locksmith never saw.

The dealer, if he'd gone that route, would have quoted him significantly more and asked him to tow it in. He was already out money from the first attempt. Getting it right this time, on site, in Samarkand, was the only thing that made sense.
