2015 Toyota RAV4 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy near Old Mission Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara flagged me down in the library lot. He had his 2015 RAV4 sitting there, dead to the world. Another locksmith had already come out, cut a key, and charged him full price. The engine cranked every time, ran for about two seconds, then the immobilizer killed fuel. Classic incomplete registration. The other tech told him the smart key computer (the ID box, part number 89990-42060) was fried and left.

The ID box was fine. What happened is the previous tech did not complete Toyota's full security seed calculation. The DST80 protocol on these 8A chip systems has a timed registration countdown. If you rush it or skip the seed exchange, the key writes to temporary memory but never commits to permanent storage in the ECU. So the car sees the key, cranks, then rejects it.

I ran my Lishi TOY43 on the door cylinder to verify the blade cut was good. It was. Connected through OBD with my IM608, cleared the botched registration, and ran a clean immobilizer reset with the full security sequence and 16-minute countdown. His HYQ14FBA fob, board number 281451-2110, registered permanently. Engine started clean, no fuel cutoff.

I pulled up the IM608 confirmation screen and showed him the key was stored. That screen is the proof. Not the crank, not the first two seconds of run time. The screen that says the ECU accepted it for good.

He had already paid someone else for a job that was never finished. I could not undo that part. What I could do was get it right.
