Got a call from a guy near Historic Plaza Park in Oxnard. His 2005 RAV4 key snapped clean in half inside the ignition cylinder. One piece of the TOY43 blade stuck deep in the wafers, the other piece just dangling from his keychain. He was mid-trip, loaded up, and had somewhere to be.
I pulled up and could see the break right away. Clean snap, probably from a hairline crack that finally gave out. Years of side-loading the key or yanking it at an angle will do that to a TOY43 blade.
I used my TOY43AT Lishi to work the broken fragment out of the cylinder. The tool fits that keyway tight enough to slide past the wafers and grab the stuck piece without scoring anything inside. Once the fragment was out, I decoded the lock on the spot, cut a fresh blade, and cloned the 4D-67 transponder through the OBD port. The whole immobilizer handshake took maybe two minutes to register.
His remote, the BAB237131-056, was still working fine. No need to touch it. The only thing that broke was the metal key and the chip inside it.
He was back on the road in under an hour from when he dialed my number. A dealer would have meant a tow, a wait for parts, and a bill that would have stung a lot worse. A snapped key feels like the trip is done. On these older RAV4s with the TOY43 keyway and 4D-67 chip, it is one of the fastest fixes I run.
