Out in Strathearn, a woman called me about her 2020 RAV4. She'd bought it used, one key, always meant to get a spare. She never did. Then she went to use the door lock cylinder on a day the fob battery was low, and the blade snapped off inside the lock. Half the key was stuck in the door, the fob housing was in her hand, and she had no backup.
When I got there, the fragment was far enough in that she'd already tried to fish it out herself. First thing I did was extract the broken blade, which took a few minutes with the right picks. The lock itself came through fine.
Here's where having the broken fob mattered: the transponder inside the cracked housing was still intact. I was able to read the chip data off it directly. That's the difference between a faster job and a full all-keys-lost reset, which takes longer because of the timed security sequence built into the process. With the chip data in hand, I cut two new key blades to the vehicle and programmed both fobs.
Start to finish, maybe 45 minutes. She had two working keys and a lock that wasn't chewed up. She mentioned the dealer had quoted her just to come in, before parts or labor. I didn't bring it up again. It was already handled.
If you've got the broken fob, even if the shell is cracked and the blade is gone, hold onto it. That chip inside is usually fine and it changes the whole job.
