A guy near Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara found me through my YouTube channel before he ever had a problem. He had watched one of my Toyota Smart Key jobs, the full process on camera, not a cartoon, and saved my number. Said he figured he would need it eventually.
Few months later his 2010 RAV4 started acting up. Short range on the fob, then "Key not detected" on the dash, then the push-button start refusing to see the key at all. He was holding the HYQ14AAB right against the steering column just to get it to turn over. Classic dying fob behavior on these third-gen RAV4s.
I met him in the hospital parking area. Opened the fob first. The CR1632 was low, but the real issue was a hairline crack on the fob's internal board near the battery terminal. The contact was intermittent. New battery, clean connection, and that fob came back to life with full range across the lot.
Then I programmed his second fob. VVDI Key Tool writes the DST80 transponder data and syncs the 315 MHz remote in one sequence. Tested every button on both fobs, tested push-button start three times cold, walked the doors checking the touch-unlock sensors on both front handles.
He stood there watching the whole thing, kept looking back at his phone like he was comparing it to the video. Same guy, same tools, same process. That part always gets people.
