Wipe down the handle area, since moisture, grime, and even wax buildup can interfere with the sensor.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2010 RAV4. Can I program it myself?

Not on a Smart Key setup. There's no button sequence or ignition-cycle trick that registers a new fob on the 2010 RAV4 Smart Key system. That type of onboard relearn applies to older bladed transponder keys in an ignition cylinder, not this system. The fob has to be paired through the diagnostic port using professional equipment. I got a call from a guy over on the Westside, Santa Barbara side of town, near the water. He'd found me before he ever needed me, which is the best way it ever goes. Watched a Toyota key video, saved the number, and called when the time came.
