Got a call from a guy on Coast Village Road in Montecito in Santa Barbara. His 2017 RAV4 was sitting in the lot behind one of those boutique shops, and he said the dash kept flashing "Key Not Detected" even though the fob was in his pocket. He had already swapped in a fresh CR1632. No change.
I pulled up and he handed me the fob right away. The HYQ14FBA felt normal, battery seated fine, contacts clean. So I plugged into the OBD-II port and pulled codes. B2799, which is Toyota's master immobilizer communication fault. On the 2017 RAV4, that code lives on the transponder key ECU, board number 89990-42022. But before going deep, I checked the basics: the oscillator coil around the start button column had a connector that was barely hanging on. Someone had been under the dash recently.
Reseated the connector. Cleared B2799. Started the car three times cold, three times warm. Tested both his fobs. Walked around all four doors checking handle touch lock and unlock. Opened the hatch from the button and from the fob. Everything responded.
He mentioned the dealer quoted him two days wait just to look at it. I was there about 40 minutes, start to finish. He kept the fobs he already had, didn't need new ones, and paid a fraction of what the dealer wanted for a diagnostic appointment alone.
