Q: What exactly is a smart key and how does the 2017 RAV4 use one?

The smart key on the 2017 RAV4 is a four-button fob with a physical blade folded inside it. Q: Only one door handle is detecting my fob. The other side makes me press the button. Is the key going bad?

Probably not the fob. The 2017 RAV4 uses separate antenna receivers at each door handle to detect the smart key and trigger passive unlock. If one side works and the other does not, but all the fob buttons still work and the push-button start reads the key normally, the fob is almost certainly fine. What you are more likely dealing with is the door-side antenna or the handle sensor on the problem door.

A guy from the Presidio neighborhood in Santa Barbara reached me through YouTube. He had been watching key replacement videos for a while, mostly out of curiosity, and had my number saved before his own situation came up. When his 2017 RAV4 fob started acting strange, he knew to call instead of guess.
