I got a call out to Mission Canyon in Santa Barbara from a woman whose 2018 RAV4 had been driving her sideways for about two weeks. It would start fine in the morning. By the time she came back to it in the evening, the start button wouldn't respond. She'd get a key-not-detected warning on the dash and stand there clicking the fob like that was going to change anything.

I popped the fob open on the hood. The CR1632 was seated correctly and wasn't dead, but it was reading low. That alone can cause intermittent detection on these. I also checked what the other locksmith had registered. The transponder pairing was off. Toyota's immobilizer on this generation is specific about which chip generation it accepts, and a mismatch doesn't always fail at first registration. Sometimes it passes the initial write and then fails the deeper verification the system runs over subsequent start cycles. That's exactly what she'd been experiencing.
I programmed a new fob with the correct transponder matched to her vehicle, put in a fresh CR1632, and walked every function. Lock, unlock, the panic button, the fourth button, touch unlock on the door handles, start button response from normal walking distance. All of it. Didn't leave until the car had been through the full check.
She asked if the dealer could have fixed this faster. Maybe. But they would have wanted the car towed in, and she would have been without it for a day minimum. I was in her driveway.
