2018 Toyota RAV4 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A woman at the laundromat near Milpas Street district in Santa Barbara flagged me down about her 2018 RAV4. Another locksmith had made her a replacement smart key about ten days earlier. It worked fine at first. Then it started acting up.
Mornings, the push button start responded like normal. By evening, the dash would flash "Key Not Detected" and the engine would not turn over. She thought the car had a wiring problem. Her mechanic thought it was the battery. Nobody looked at the key.
I pulled the back cover off her HYQ14FBA fob right on the hood. The CR1632 inside was weak, maybe sat on a shelf too long, but that was the smaller issue. I read the chip with my VVDI2 and there it was. The previous locksmith had programmed a G-chip transponder. Her RAV4's smart ECU, part number 89990-42160, expects an 8A chip running DST-AES encryption. A G-chip can pass the initial handshake but fails the deeper rolling verification Toyota runs over multiple ignition cycles. That is why it worked for a week and then didn't.
I programmed a new fob with the correct 8A chip matched to her system, dropped in a fresh CR1632, and tested every function. Doors, hatch, panic, push start, walk-away lock. All clean.
She could have ended up at the dealer, waiting days and paying a lot more. Instead it took about 35 minutes at the laundromat.
