I was parked off Cliff Drive in San Roque when the call came in. Owner had a 2014 RAV4, said his smart key was "kind of working." He could start the car but the door handles weren't responding to touch, and the lock button on the fob took three or four presses to do anything.
He mentioned he'd already paid someone else to fix it. Paid a lot.
He'd found an ad online, called a number that picked up in what sounded like a call center, and a guy showed up within twenty minutes. The job took about an hour, the price went from the quoted amount to something more than four times that, and he handed over the cash because his wife was waiting on him and he didn't know what else to do. The fob they handed back worked inconsistently from day one.
When I got there, I asked him to pop the fob. The battery was the wrong size, seated at an angle, and the contact clip was bent outward. The previous tech had forced a CR2032 into a slot built for a CR1632. That's not a small thing. A bent contact means intermittent connection, which means the fob talks to the car sometimes and ghosts out other times.
I replaced it with the right cell, seated it correctly, and straightened the clip. Then I walked the car. Touch unlock on both door handles. All four buttons. Start button response. Everything came back clean.
Before I left, he asked how to know who's real next time. I gave him my BSIS license number, LCO 6792. That's California's Bureau of Security and Investigative Services. It means background checks, insurance, and a registered business address. You can look it up before anyone touches your car. I also told him: if the price quoted on the phone triples the moment the tech is standing at your window, that's the signal to stop.
He didn't need a new key. He needed the right battery in the right slot, done by someone who knew the difference.
