2009 Toyota RAV4 MECHANICAL-KEY Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A guy visiting family near the Oxnard Performing Arts Center called me about his 2009 RAV4. He had one working key and wanted a spare he could actually carry daily, not stash in a drawer somewhere.
First thing he asked: is aftermarket going to be as good as a dealer key. Fair question. I get it a lot on these third-gen RAV4s.
Here is the honest version. The OEM Toyota key, part number 89785-08020 for the blank, uses the same TOY43 blade profile and the same 4D-67 transponder chip as the aftermarket blank I carry. Same cut, same chip generation, same immobilizer handshake with the 93C56 EEPROM on his ECU. The difference is a Toyota logo on the bow. That is it.
I cut the blade on my machine right there in the parking lot. Programmed the 4D-67 chip through the OBD-II port using his existing master key present, which keeps the process quick, about 15 minutes total. Tested the new key on ignition, tested the original right after. Both started the car clean, no security light flicker.
He turned both keys over in his hand a few times comparing them. Same weight, same blade thickness, same feel in the ignition. He just nodded.
Where aftermarket goes wrong is cheap blanks with thin plastic bows and generic chips that half-work. I test every batch before it goes in the van. If a shell cracks or a chip throws a registration error, the whole lot gets sent back.
