1997 Chevrolet Cavalier MECHANICAL-KEY Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Over near Tierra Rejada Golf Club in Moorpark, a guy flagged me down for his 1997 Cavalier. He had locked his only key inside the car while grabbing his golf bag out of the back seat. Door shut, key on the console, done.
He had already called around. One place told him they would need to "program the transponder." Another said something about a security relearn. He was confused because he thought his Cavalier just had a regular metal key. He was right.
The 97 Cavalier runs a plain B89 mechanical key blank. No chip, no resistor pellet, no PassLock on this year. It is literally a cut piece of brass that turns the wafers in the ignition cylinder and the door locks. That is the whole system.
I picked the door lock, got him back in, then cut a spare B89 right there from the code on file. Tested it in the ignition, both door locks, and the trunk. Everything turned clean.
The whole thing took about fifteen minutes. He kept saying he thought all cars from the 90s had some kind of computer key. A lot of people think that. The 97 Cavalier is one of those cars that just does not. A plain cut key, no appointment, no tow, no week-long wait at the dealer parts counter.
