Got a call from a guy near the Fremont Square Shopping Center in Oxnard. His 2002 Cavalier was turning over but refusing to start, and the SECURITY light on the dash was just sitting there, glowing steady. He'd already replaced the battery, swapped spark plugs, and had a neighbor try jumping it. None of that was the problem.

Passlock II. The resistance sensor inside the lock cylinder had drifted, and the BCM was rejecting the signal. Classic failure on these J-body cars. GM even put out TSB 02-06-04-007, later revised as PIC5343, covering exactly this: security light on, no start, lock cylinder sensor out of spec.

I drove out, confirmed the fault with my scan tool on the OBD port, and ran the Passlock relearn. Three 10-minute ignition cycles with the key on, waiting for the SECURITY light to go off each round. Thirty minutes of sitting there watching a dashboard. Not glamorous work.

While we waited through those cycles, he kept looking at his phone like he was about to call someone else. I told him that's just how GM built it. The timer is baked in. No shortcut.

After the third cycle, key off, ten seconds, restart. Fired right up. I cut him a fresh B102 key on the spot and paired his 15732805 remote for the doors and trunk. He went from dead in a parking lot to two working keys without the car ever touching a flatbed.
