A concrete finisher called me from a jobsite off San Jose Creek in Goleta. His 1996 Dodge Dakota wouldn't turn over and the pour was scheduled for noon. His tools were locked in the bed under a tonneau cover and his only key had been ground down to almost nothing from years of use on the ignition cylinder.
I got out there in about 30 minutes. One look at the key told the whole story. The cuts were so worn the wafers inside the lock cylinder couldn't read the bitting anymore. The key would slide in but barely grab, and when it did turn, it would stick halfway and not reach the start position. Classic wear pattern on these older Chrysler Y157 blanks.
I decoded the lock using a Lishi CY24 pick and read the original wafer depths. Cut a fresh Y157 on my mobile machine right there in the dirt lot. Slid it in and the ignition turned smooth like it probably hadn't in years. He looked at the new key, then looked at the old one side by side, and just shook his head.
No chip to program, no module to talk to, no diagnostic port needed. Just a correctly cut piece of brass. He was loading wheelbarrows before the first truck of mud showed up. The whole thing from my arrival to engine start took maybe 20 minutes.
