Out in Oxnard Shores, right off the water, a guy had a 2000 Dakota sitting in his driveway that he used for hauling gear to the marina. Nothing fancy, just a working truck. He had two remotes when he bought it used. One stopped working, he tossed it. The second one eventually did the same thing, and now he had nothing.
He figured he would just buy a cheap replacement fob online and program it himself. He found the factory button sequence, tried it maybe a dozen times, and nothing happened. He called me after that.
When I got there, I asked if he still had the fob he tossed. He did not. That was the issue. The onboard programming sequence on this generation of Dakota requires you to enter programming mode with a working remote first. No working remote, no self-programming. The sequence is designed that way, and there is no workaround from the driver seat.
I connected through the OBD port, ran the programming procedure with my equipment, and enrolled his new fob. Then I had him test lock and unlock from the end of the driveway while I watched the truck respond. Clean.
He mentioned the Dodge dealer was about 20 minutes up the road. He had already called them before me. They told him to drop the truck and they would get to it when they could. He was not willing to leave the truck. I did it in his driveway while the marine layer was still burning off.
