2001 Dodge Dakota Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Got a call one night from a guy stuck near the Esplanade Shopping Center in Oxnard. He was a long-haul trucker between loads, and his 2001 Dodge Dakota just would not turn over. Key went in, turned fine mechanically, gauges swept, but the engine cranked for a second and died. The Sentry Key warning light on the dash was blinking steady, which told me the SKIM was rejecting the transponder before I even got there.
He had already called two dealers. Both closed. The one with a next-day opening told him they would need the truck towed in and it would be at least a day or two for parts and scheduling.
I drove out that night. Pulled his key and tested the transponder with my VVDI2. The PCF7936 chip inside was still broadcasting, but weak and intermittent. The plastic key head had a hairline crack near the base, and the chip had shifted just enough to drop signal at the SKIM antenna ring. Some days it would start, some days it would not.
I cloned the chip data onto a fresh PCF7936 in a new BY160-PT shell, cut the Y160 blade on my Condor, and test-started the truck three times cold. Clean starts, no Sentry Key light.
He sat in the cab for a second after the third start, just watching the dash. Then he said he had a pickup two hours north at six in the morning and he had been sitting there trying to figure out how to explain being late.
He made his pickup.
