I got a call from a woman over in Mandalay Beach, Oxnard. She had a 2005 Dakota sitting in her driveway and a remote head key that had stopped doing anything. Not intermittent, not "sometimes works if I hold it a certain way." Just dead. No lock, no unlock, no response from the fob at all.
She had already been to a parts store and swapped the CR2032. Still nothing. She figured the dealer was her only option and had already looked up tow rates.
I drove out to her. Popped the fob open on my tailgate and checked the battery contacts first. One of them had a slight corrosion bloom, which is pretty common on these when the old battery sat in there for years. Cleaned the contacts, seated a fresh CR2032, tested range. Nothing still.
So we moved on. The fob itself had failed, which happens. These are twenty-year-old trucks at this point. I had a replacement unit on the van, cut the blade to her vehicle on-site, and programmed it through the OBD port. The whole procedure on this generation of Dodge doesn't require any gateway bypass or factory security credentials. The tools talk to the system directly. Took about twenty minutes start to finish, including verifying that all four buttons worked and that the engine actually started and stayed running.
She had assumed a tow plus a dealer appointment plus however many days without her truck. Instead she was back inside with a working key before noon. The dealer route would have cost her a good chunk more, not counting the tow she didn't need.
