Got a call around 9:15 at night from a guy out in Dos Pueblos Canyon, Goleta. His 1999 Dodge Dakota was sitting in a laundromat parking lot and wouldn't crank. He'd just finished a janitorial shift and had another building to get to by midnight. Dark lot, no one around, dealer closed hours ago.
He was convinced his key fob had died because nothing seemed to respond when he pressed the buttons. No locks clicking, no panic horn, nothing.
I drove out and started with the obvious. Popped the back off his GQ43VT9T remote and the CR2025 was basically dead. Flat voltage, no life left. That explained the remote side. But a dead remote doesn't stop a 1999 Dakota from starting. This truck has no transponder, no Sentry Key system. The ignition key is purely mechanical.
So I moved to the truck. Battery terminals were corroded pretty bad on the positive side, enough to drop voltage below what the starter solenoid needed. Cleaned the posts, tested the battery, and it had just enough charge left to turn over. Truck fired right up.
Put a fresh CR2025 in his remote, tested all three buttons against the body controller, locks cycled fine. He was back on the road with time to spare.
The whole thing looked like a key problem from his end. It wasn't. A corroded terminal and a spent coin battery just happened to fail on the same night.
