Downtown Ventura, apartment parking lot, middle of the afternoon. A guy called saying his only key to a 2000 F-250 had snapped - blade stuck in the door lock, key head in his hand, truck going nowhere.

He'd bought it used a couple years back with one key and never got around to making a spare. That's the story I hear more than any other. Not a dramatic loss, just one key that finally gave out at the worst possible moment.

When I got there he handed me the broken head like it was evidence. The blade was still seated in the lock cylinder, which actually worked in his favor. I extracted the fragment, decoded the lock from what I had, and cut a new key blade to match. The chip inside the cracked housing was still intact and readable, so I was able to clone the transponder data instead of running an all-keys-lost procedure. That matters because all-keys-lost on these trucks takes longer and costs more.

I cut him two keys, ran both through programming, and tested them back to back - crank, start, idle, done. He stood there watching the whole thing from about three feet away, which I prefer. No mystery.

He mentioned the dealer had already quoted him a number that made him pause before he even asked what they'd charge for the programming on top. He saved a good chunk coming to me, and he didn't have to arrange a tow or wait two days for a service appointment.
