Out in the Erbes Road neighborhood in Thousand Oaks, a guy with a 2017 F-250 had been fighting his ignition for weeks. He'd push the start button, get nothing, push it again, wait, try holding the fob against the steering column. Sometimes it fired up on the third or fourth try. I pulled up and started with the simple stuff. Cracked open his M3N-A2C31243300 fob and both CR2025 cells were low, but not dead. That in-between voltage is the worst because the system sees the key intermittently. Swapped both batteries, cleaned the board contacts, and tested range. Fob was hitting the door handles from 15 feet again.
Then I connected my diagnostic tool to the OBD-II port and read the PATS module. No stored fault codes against the key ID. The fob was still fully registered. His second spare key in the kitchen drawer tested the same way: weak batteries, strong registration.
He didn't need a new module. He needed four CR2025 cells, two per fob, and someone who checks the actual data before recommending parts. The truck started clean every time after that. He just stood there watching me hit the button like he was waiting for it to act up again.
